Utah Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) Warehouse - Total Building Commissioning (TBC) provided building commissioning services for a $7.2 milllion, 17,000-sq. ft. addition to the existing 118,000 sq. ft. ABC Warehouse. Within the addition, a high-density pallet storage and distribution operation was installed using an Automated Storage and Retrieval System (ASRS), which was also commissioned by TBC.

The new warehouse earns distinction by being one of the largest of its kind in Utah and one of only a handful of rack-supported buildings within the state. The warehouse is a complex system of pallet conveyor, pallets, storage and retrieval machines, hoist systems and other automated machinery all designed to quickly and efficiently organize, store, and retrieve product pallets to be distributed to retail locations throughout the state. The racks are stacked more than 100 feet tall, allowing for the vertical storage of 14 pallets of liquor, which are arranged 44 pallets deep along five aisles. This configuration provides 6,157 storage locations, which must be accessed quickly and safely. The storage and retrieval machines are able to move pallets at 656 feet per minute. It’s the speed of this machinery that makes such a system practical.

In addition to its high speed, the storage and retrieval operation is computer controlled, helping the Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control to save money as well as increasing its efficiency. In fact, the retrieval system is so automated that the operation can run at night as 2,000-pound (or heavier) pallets are automatically retrieved even with the warehouse lights shut off.

TBC commissioned the following systems:

• ASRS
• HVAC
• Humidity control
• BMS Controls
• Conveyor
• Software
• Electrical
